Full Automation of Log Sawing System for the Wood Industry

A client in the wood processing sector operated a manually controlled log saw, where an on-site operator was responsible for selecting the optimal cutting dimensions in real time. The goal was to maximize yield from each log based on live production orders. While effective, the process was labor-intensive, dependent on human judgment, and limited in scalability. The client challenged us to fully automate the system, eliminating the need for continuous operator presence while improving efficiency, consistency, and throughput. We developed a computer vision system that uses high-resolution cameras and AI-based software to analyze each log’s dimensions and characteristics. The system calculates the optimal combination of cuts in real time, dynamically adjusting to current order requirements to maximize output per log. In addition to the optimization logic, we automated the machine’s entire operation, including log handling, loading, and unloading. The output is sorted into separate stacks by size through a fully autonomous system. All components were integrated with the client’s ERP, enabling end-to-end traceability and seamless production scheduling. The result is a fully autonomous system operating 24/7, with no need for manual supervision. The plant now delivers higher productivity, reduced material waste, and precise, real-time control over every phase of the cutting process.
