Automated Sheet Loading for Laser Cutting Operations

A client in the metal fabrication industry faced growing inefficiencies in their laser cutting operations due to manual handling of sheet metal. Loading and unloading sheets between cutting cycles was time-consuming, labor-intensive, and a major contributor to production slowdowns and increased operational costs. As order volumes rose and job variability increased, the manual process became a bottleneck, limiting the client’s ability to scale production efficiently and consistently. We designed and implemented an integrated automation system combining an automated sheet metal storage unit with a direct interface to the laser cutting machine. A custom-developed management software connects in real-time with the client’s ERP and receives work orders directly from the technical office. Based on order specifications, the system automatically selects the correct sheet type, retrieves it from storage, and positions it on the cutting table. Once the cycle is complete, the processed sheet is removed automatically, and the system resets for the next job without delay. This solution enabled a smooth, continuous production workflow, eliminated manual handling errors, and significantly increased overall plant productivity. The result is a streamlined, high-efficiency operation with reduced cycle times and lower labor dependency.
